Visitors under the SANDIWA project, 12 June 2016

Father Fernando Radin (OFM), 4th from right, celebrated our Community Mass today. He was accompanied by Bro. Mark Angelo Vito (OFM),  Bro. Christian Marave (O.Carm.), Bro. Joseph Roque (O.Carm) and theology students Tessi Dörflinger, Birgit Rath and Barbara Niedermann. The monks are visiting Austria for one month under the SANDIWA exchange project of the Catholic Theology Faculty of the University of Vienna and the Intercongregational Theological Centre in Manila, and are being guided throughout their visit by the three theology students who earlier spent a month in the Philippines.

Tessie, Birgit and Barbara stayed with families during their visit in the Philippines thus gaining insight into our social structures  (e.g. how we use "Ate" and "Kuya"). They speak some words of Tagalog.

Brother Joseph mentioned that the few times that they ran into Filipinas/os while walking around in Vienna, it was easy to recognise them as Filipinas/os because the latter always greeted them with a smile, even from afar.

Auxiliary Bishop Scharl celebrates Community Mass, 3 Nov. 2013

The Chaplaincy welcomed Auxiliary Bishop Dr. Franz Scharl at its Community Mass this Sunday, 3 November. He delivered the homily at the altar, symbolically stepping down from the ambo, as in the Gospel, where Jesus asked Zacchaeus to step down from the sycamore tree.

Our good Bishop was pleased to see the high number of parishioners attending the Holy Mass, although there was no special occasion, as well as the sacristans, choir members and lay ministers contributing to the celebration.

He obligingly posed for souvenir photographs with our parishioners after the Mass.

ARGE-AAG Confirmation, Whitsunday, 19 May 2013

Parallel to the bible readings for today's Holy Mass, the non-German speaking communities of the Archdiocese of Vienna worshipped in many tongues as ARGE-AAG celebrated the administration of the Sacrament of Confirmation to this year's confirmands. Holy Mass was celebrated by Auxiliary Bishop Dr Franz Scharl, and the priests of the communities con-celebrated the service. Choirs from the various communities accompanied the eucharistic celebration with hymns in their respective languages, and parishioners in different national dress brought their gifts to the altar. The prayers of the faithful were also said in many languages and addressed the particular situations where the special graces of our Lord are needed. How blessed we are to have this experience, and may it strengthen our community life.

For our FCC community, 21 confirmands reached today the conclusion of their formation meetings that have been held since January under the guidance of Father Ely and with the active support of the Ates and Kuyas of the Youth Ministry, and the many dedicated adult helpers. Praise to our Lord forever.

FCC Lenten Recollection, 23 March 2013

For our annual Lenten Retreat, we were fortunate to have as facilitator this year Msgr. Marnito Bansig from the Diocese of Maasin in Southern Leyte, who is currently pursuing theological studies in Rome.

Citing Genesis 1.26-27, Msgr Bansig reminded us that we are made in the "image" of God and expounded on God's challenge to man to bring that image to perfection, i.e., to His "likeness".  He touched on the dimensions of "love" according to Pope John Paul II, and invited reflection on the story of the prodigal son in Luke 15:11-32.

Thank you to CFC for logistics, El Shaddai for ice breakers, Lani Pacheco and her team for coffee breaks and all participants who brought homemade delicacies for the pot-luck lunch. Thank you to everyone who came to share this day with us.

1st Holy Mass for our kababayans in Wr. Neustadt and environs, 27 Jan. 2013

The apostolate work of our Legion of Mary bore fruit today in the form of the first Holy Mass for our kababayans living in Wiener Neustadt and environs. Father Ely celebrated the mass in the (heated) chapel of the St. Jacob's church of the Capuchin monks, and we were happy to count about 40 local parishioners. In his homily, Father Ely enjoined the congregation to read and live the bible, and reminded that prayer is 99% listening and only 1% talking. Mara Seger and her team prepared and served agape in the Franziskussaal after the mass. Starting in February 2013, Holy Mass will be said every 4th Sunday of the month at 14h for our kababayans. Thank you, Mama Mary, for making this possible!

Feast of Sto. Niño, 20 January 2013

Once again, we celebrated the Feast of the Sto. Niño, which falls on the 3rd Sunday in January. Parishioners brought their images of the Christ Child for the traditional annual blessing and parading around the church in typical sinulog style.

Her Excellency Ambassador Lourdes Yparraguirre graced the occasion and is shown in the photo with Cultural Attache Toni Bosa and officers of Kapunongan ng mga Bisaya sa Austria. KBA coordinated the colorful sinulog programme which was presented in the Upper Church after lunch.

Viva El Señor!

Today, the fourth Sunday in Advent, Auxilliary Bishop Franz Scharl visited with us and celebrated our Community Mass. He cited the special place of our Community in the Archdiocese of Vienna, thanked us for all the work that we are doing to live our faith as an example for others. Calling the sacristans to stand around him for the homily, he noted that they naturally responded to his questions in German.

Maligayang Pasko po, Bishop!

"Jesus of Nazareth" play of the Youth Ministry, 14 December 2012

After many months of practicing after-school and during the weekends, our Youth Ministry hosted this evening a cultural presentation focusing on the life of Jesus Christ, and His relevance to today's youth. There were also some modern dance numbers to showcase their skills. Although they had the constant support of their dedicated and loving Titas and Titos, it was nevertheless the youth themselves who took the responsibility for carrying out this project, which is all the more to be lauded as the preparatory work took place parallel to the start of the school year. Our special guests were Her Excellency Ambassador Lourdes Yparraguirre, Cultural Attache Toni Bosa and Sr. M. Petronilla Herl of the Franciscan School Sisters. The latter were instrumental in the formation of the Youth MInistry through the work of Sr. Claire Marie Obrero. Congratulations, YOUTH MINISTRY, for a job well done and thank you to everyone who supported the event.

San Pedro Calungsod, 21 October 2012

Our 2nd Filipino saint was canonized today by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI at ceremonies held on St. Peter's Square in the Vatican City. He was from the Visayas region, and was serving as a cathechist with Jesuit friars on Guam Island when he was martyred in 1672. San Pedro Calungsod has been named the patron saint of Overseas Foreign Workers (OFWs) and the youth. Listen to the homily of Pope Benedikt XVI.

Among the countless Filipinos (based in the Philippines, and in various cities in Europe) who attended the rites were 51 of our parishioners led by Father Bong Alejo, who returned from the experience expressing feelings of deep joy, inspiration and pride.

St Pedro Calungsod, pray for us!

Feast of San Lorenzo Ruiz, 30 September 2012

Filipino Catholics in Vienna marked today the Feast of San Lorenzo Ruiz at the parish of Maria vom Berge Karmel, with Father Bernie Alejo officiating at the Holy Mass and Father Ron Sandoval and Father Gerry Tapiador (Diocese of Novaliches) among the concelebrants. Our Youth Ministry provided the music and assisted in the liturgy. Beautiful weather made possible a fiesta-style lunch in the parish garden.
Maraming salamat, it was a wonderful community day!

Painting the Pfarrsaal, 27-31 August 2012

Summer is quickly drawing to a close, but although it has been a rather busy period for us, we're putting our shoulders to the wheel and completing a special project - the re-painting of the parish - before the start of the next school year. The work is being led by Bong Mangalino with the moral, physical, and financial support of the the religious groups and certain individuals in our community. Of course, Father Ely and Father Bong are personally involved in the work, as are Josie, Daday, Evelyn, Luz, Dannie, Tony and George.

During this period, repairs are also being undertaken on the elevator in the convent. For this, we have been actively raising funds since autumn 2011, and were recently able to turn over €13700 to Father Anton as our contribution to the costs. We are busy.

Visit of Stella Maris Choir (Surrey, Canada), 3-6 August 2012

"He who sings, prays twice." Making Vienna the first stop on their European tour, the choir inspired the congregation at the 7 p.m. Anticipated Mass at Stephansdom, our 11 a.m. Community Mass on Sunday and the early afternoon concert thereafter. Guests and hosts are shown here, obviously having thoroughly enjoyed the concert. The members expressed deep appreciation for the warm hospitality extended to them.  Adieu, we hope to see you again.

Commissioning of youth leaders & farewell of Sr. Claire Marie, 17 June 2012

Christian Abainza, Monique Albances, Dominic Biag, Larlhen Biag, Dara-Joy Dacillo, Shawn-Michael Honrado and Gerwyn Oca were commissoned as Leaders of our Youth Ministry at today's community mass. This is an important step in the growth and development of this ministry under the spiritual direction of Sr. Claire Marie Obrero of the Franciscan School Sisters.

Unfortunately, Sr. Claire Marie will be returning to her regional house in Texas (USA) after spending three and a half years at her mother house in Vienna. She took this occasion to bid farewell to our community, express appreciation for all those who supported her in her work, but also to ask us to love the youth and the Youth Ministry so that it can continue to grow.

Sr. M. Petronilla Herl, Vicar General of the Franciscan School Sisters, expressed her congregation's full support and appreciation for Sr Claire Marie's work for our community.

Auf Wiedersehen, Sister Claire, we will think of you as you continue your apostolate in Texas!

Visit of Father Joey, 3 June 2012

On the occasion of his first visit in Vienna since returning in 2010 to his parish in Cavite, Father Joey officiated at the Community Mass today.

In his homily he observed that the Community continues to grow actively in faith and deed with the blessings of the Lord. He was happy to see many sacristans serving at the mass, and noted that the FGS choir had widened its repertoire. He was also full of admiration for the exceptionally beautiful floral decorations, although the month of May had already passed.

Father Joey looks good, he has adjusted to life in the Philippines, but often thinks fondly of our Community.

Our FCC Choir under the baton of Father Bong Alejo sang "Ave Maria" and "Salve Regina" at the ARGE-AAG presentation of "Magnificat"  to mark Lange Nacht der Kirchen, at Canisius church in the 9th district.

It was a moving performance, and much appreciated by the audience.

Praise the Lord, allelujah!

Pentecost, 27 May 2012

Archdiocese of Vienna's Auxiliary Bishop Franz Scharl gave the sacrament of Confirmation to 96 confirmands from ARGE-AAG, the non-German speaking Catholic communities. 45 of the confirmands were from the Filipino Catholic Chaplaincy. Holy Mass was said in German, English and Latin, with the Prayers of the Faithful being read in Spanish, French, Aramaic, Persian, Chinese, Korean and Arabic. The various communities also contributed to the music in their respective cultural styles.

Bishop Scharl obligingly and untiringly posed for photographs with all sectors of the congregation, before joining the community for agape in the paved courtyard and staying to participate in the  merry-making until the late evening hours.

Friday, 25 May 2012 - Auf Wiedersehen, Father Jojo

On the 11th anniversary today of his ordination into priesthood, Father Jojo celebrated early evening mass, attended by members of both the Austrian and Filipino communities of Pfarre Maria vom Berge Karmel. It was also the occasion to bid farewell before his return in June to teach theology in the seminary of the Archdiocese of Capiz.

After Holy Mass, a Filipino-style buffet with the de rigueur lechon was enjoyed by all guests in the parish hall & cafe. The religious organizations, youth group and some individuals (including our budding young singers Darleen, Jessica and Mary) presented musical numbers for the evening's entertainment.

Good-bye Father Jojo, you have given us constant and faithful guidance on our spiritual journey: we will miss you!

Easter Sunday, 8 April 2012

The community observed the conclusion of Easter Triduum with the celebration today of Easter Sunday mass (said and sung in Tagalog, English and German), and at which we renewed our baptismal promises.  The trips to Heiligenkreuz (Holy Thursday) and Pöstlingberg/Linz (Good Friday) for the Way of the Cross were well-attended, as was the celebration last night of the Easter Vigil. Today, we met our Confirmands and  First Communicants.

After agape, the youth ministry guided the program with games for young children and numbers presented by the younger members of the community. It was so refreshing to see the younger members of our community being so active in community life. Happy Easter!

Thank you to everyone who made our celebrations possible!

Palm Sunday, 1 April 2012

Holy Week 2012 services started today with the blessing of the palms. Palm branches were flown in from Asia as a donation, and shaped in the traditional Filipino styles by volunteer parishioners. We also used traditional Austrian willow catkins. Suffragan Bishop Franz Scharl had originally planned to celebrate the Holy Mass with our Community, but was unfortunately indisposed.

Lenten Recollection, 31 March 2012

To prepare us for the celebration of Holy Week, Rev. Fr. Jose Conrado "Dongdong" Estafia facilitated this year's Lenten Recollection on the topic "Sehr gut! A recollection on human goodness".

Enjoined to treat the community recollection as a part of their formation activities, members of the  various religious groups attended the whole day event and filled the parish hall and vestibule. The morning programme included a sharing session called "True Confessions". After pot-luck lunch and the afternoon session, Fathers Ely, Jojo, Bong, Dongdong and Efren were available to hear confession.

Pilgrimage to the Shrine of St. Hemma, Gurk, 25 February 2012

67 members of our community (of whom more than 20% were from the Legion of Mary) travelled to the Shrine of St. Hemma in Gurk, Carinthia. A noblewoman, St. Hemma used her great wealth to help the poor, and built ten churches after the death of her husband and two sons. It took more than 800 years before she was canonized in 1938. Pilgrims from Slovenia and Styria traditionally visit the Shrine especially at Easter, and seek her intercession for childbirth and diseases of the eye. Her feast day is 27 June.

St. Hemma's tomb can be found in the crypt of the cathedral, which features 100 columns.

After lunch in Gurk, the group travelled to the Styrian city of Leoben for a short tour ending in the shopping centre which was formerly a Dominican abbey.

The activity counts among the Chaplaincy's efforts to raise funds for the repair of the elevator in the MvBK convent-house.

Ash Wednesday, presentation of Confirmands, 22 February 2012

Bishop Stephan Turnovsky celebrated today the Ash Wednesday mass for the non-German speaking communities of the Archdiocese of Vienna (ARGE-AAG) at the parish church of Lainz, in Vienna's 12th district. It was also the traditional occasion to introduce the ARGE-AAG's confirmands, who, in a special part of the mass, shared with the congregation what confirmation means to them. This year, the Chaplaincy is preparing 45 youths to receive the sacrament of Confirmation.

The service was also the occasion for catechumens to receive the "Our Father", an important step in the preparation for their adult baptism.

The FCC Choir provided the music during the distribution of the ashes, and the blessing of the confirmands.

Valentine's Day Fundraiser, 12 February 2012

The Chaplaincy marked Valentine's Day today with a luncheon fund-raiser held at the Pfarrsaal after the Community Mass. This is one of the activities that we are undertaking to raise funds toward repair-costs of the elevator in the convent, scheduled to take place in October this year. Religious groups pitched in to prepare and sell refreshments, and our musically talented parishioners entertained the audience through an afternoon of dancing.

Once again, we celebrated the Feast of the Sto. Niño, which falls on the 3rd Sunday in January. Parishioners brought their images of the Christ Child for the traditional annual blessing, and parading around the church in typical sinulog style.

Theo Figuracion headed the Sinulog Committee of KBA to coordinate the sinulog programme, presented in the Upper Church after lunch.

The main celebrations in Naga (Cebu Island) drew many participants not only from the Philippines but also from other countries, and Filipino Communities celebrated the occasion worlwide.

Advent Recollection, 19 November 2011

The Chaplaincy held today its annual Advent Recollection, inviting as speaker Father Junar dela Victoria (Archdiocese of Davao), who is currently pursuing further studies in Rome.

Enjoining us to focus on and appreciate what we are holding in our hands, Father Junar expounded on the acquired meaning of "expectation of Christ's second coming" in the various symbols of Advent. He then gave a detailed explanation of the liturgy for the four Sundays in Advent, before reviewing the steps for examination of conscience in preparation for making confession.

Thanks to CFC-FFL, FGS and El Shaddai for logistics support, and the Fatima Devotees and friends for arranging coffee/tea breaks.

World Mission Sunday, 23 October 2011

ARGE-AAG Weltkirche in Wien,MISSIO Päpstliche Missionswerke and the Archdiocese of Vienna's Referat für Mission und Entwicklung organized the celebration today of World Mission Sunday with the celebration of Holy Mass at St. Stephen's Cathedral, followed by agape at the Archbishop's Palace.

Priests from the non-German speaking Catholic communities in Vienna concelebrated the Holy Mass with Weihbischof Franz Scharl and Rektor Johannes Gönner, and the communities contributed actively to the liturgy through prayer, songs and offerings in the usual colourful way of such celebrations. Father Rodolfo French from Nicaragua explained in the homily how MISSIO is making a difference in his country.

In his opening words, Bishop Scharl emphasized that the non-German speaking communities are not merely guests, but are very much a part of the Archdiocese of Vienna.

Maraming salamat to everyone in the Chaplaincy who supported this event through their presence and active participation in the celebration of the Holy Mass and the agape.

Food Festival, 16 October 2011

The Chaplaincy held another Food Festival today, this time to raise funds to cover our heating costs, and invited religious & other groups to sell home-made delicacies to eat on-site and also to take home. The sun was shining, but it was a little cold: a gentle reminder of what we can expect in the weeks to come.

We were graced with the presence of Father Rey Villanoy and Deodol Dorado, friends of Father Jojo, and visiting us from the Archdiocese of Capiz.

Father Ely with parishioners

Bishop Antonio Tobias of the Diocese of Novaliches celebrated our Community Mass today, and - together with Divine Mercy Devotees mainly based in Metro Manila - were invited to lunch as guests of the FCC Divine Mercy Devotees headed by Daday Sitthiprom. The Devotees attended the just-concluded World Apostolic Congress of Divine Mercy in Poland, and are visiting for a few days in Vienna before proceeding to Rome

Jesus' Time, Youth Rosary, and Flohmarkt, 9 October 2011

With thanks to Cacay Granado and her many enthusiastic young adult helpers, the Chaplaincy holds Jesus' Time twice a month in connection with the Community Mass. Jesus' Time is our pastoral activity for children, and is gaining popularity. More and more children participate in the activity, and present their work to the community after the Holy Mass.

In the 2nd Sunday of this Month of the Holy Rosary, our Youth Pastoral Ministry led the praying of the rosary before the Community Mass. They prayed for youths worldwide, lighting candles for every rosary decade corresponding to 5 world regions.

The Filipino Catholic Chaplaincy Youth Ministry also presented its new logo, designed by our youths who attended the Youth Summer Camp in August.

It was a very busy Sunday in our parish, we also supported the Austrian community's Flohmarkt by selling soup & lunch, and take-home Filipino delicacies in the convent vestibule. Members of the Pastoral Council and supporters from the Fatima Group submit the proceeds of this activity, Euro 414.50, to Father Anton. Father Castor and members of the Austrian Pfarrgemeinderat were also present.

Living Rosary and Feast of Our Lady of Manaoag, 2 October 2011

We marked today the start of the Month of the Holy Rosary by praying
the living rosary in the parish garden before the Community Mass.

Today is also the Feast of Our Lady of Manaoag (formally: Nuestra Señora del Santissimo Rosario de Manaoag, literal translation: Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary of Manaoag), a 17th century ivory icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the central figure at the altar of her shrine located in Manaoag, Pangasinan. Locally known as the patroness of the town, it is one of the most venerated Marian images of Mary in the Philippines.

The statue's reputed miracles became famous in the 1940's. Several Japanese bombs were dropped within the church's vicinity. A bomb which fell on the statue's sanctuarium remained intact and did not explode. Commonly addressed as Apo Baket in native Pangasinense and Ilocano dialect, Mary, under this title, is officially known as the patroness of the sick, the helpless and the needy. (Source: Wikipedia)

The Association of Pangasinenses in Austria hosted agape in the Parish Hall after the Community Mass, and organized a musical program.

Feast of San Lorenzo Ruiz, 25 September 2011

The Community celebrated today the Feast of San Lorenzo Ruiz, the first Filipino saint. In the 16th century, he went on mission with the Dominicans to Japan and was martyred after refusing to denounce his faith.

In his homily, Father Ely likened St. Lorenzo to modern-day Filipino OFW's who are known in their chosen surroundings to be cheerful, faithful, helpful and upright Christians.

To prepare for the Month of the Holy Rosary in October, the Fatima Devotees distributed rosaries and rosary guides.
And, of course, no celebration is complete without some refreshments ... so the Pastoral Council served sandwiches and drinks in the church courtyard after the Community Mass. Some of the sandwiches found their way to the Pfarrsaal, the Pfarrcafe and the Gruppenraum where various groups held their regular Sunday meetings.

The House of God was, indeed, full on His day.

Youth Summer Camp, 7-13 August 2011

"Know your hero, live your hero" was the theme of this year's Youth Summer Camp held at KJUBIZ in Gross Stelzendorf, Lower Austria. Discussions and activities were guided by Father Ely and Sister Claire Marie, with the help of Youth Leaders from previous activities, adult coordinators and other supporters from the Community. Participants designed the logo of the Chaplaincy's youth ministry, expressing the wish to be called Youth Messengers.

Father Gregory Gaston, Rector of the Pontifical Filipino College and official of the Pontifical Council of the Family (both in Rome) visited with us and expounded on SAFE (Subtle Attacks on the Family Explained) at a whole-day talk held on Saturday in the parish hall. An article he recently wrote on the subject is available for downloading here.

He stayed to enjoy the Food Festival - a fund-raising activity for our Youth Pastoral Program - held early Sunday afternoon at the Parish garden.

Patrozinium, 10 July 2011

The Austrian and Philippine communities at the Parish of Maria vom Berge Karmel celebrated today the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, with the celebration of Holy Mass at 10 a.m.followed by Agape in the Parish Hall.

It commemorates Her apparition in July 1251 to Saint Simon Stock, General of the Order of Mount Carmel, as he knelt in prayer at White Friars' convent in Cambridge. She appeared before him and presented him with the well-known brown scapular, a loose sleeveless garment that serves as an assurance of her Heavenly protection from eternal death for all who die wearing it.

The congregation noted the especially beautiful church floral decorations prepared for the occasion by members of the FCC Legion of Mary.

This year, the Followers of the Good Shepherd took over the responsibility for setting up and clearing the parish hall for the agape, and all FCC religious organizations pitched in to bring and serve pancit to all guests.

Pfarrfest of Austrian Community, 19 June 2011

The Austrian Community celebrated its annual Pfarrfest today, and enjoyed the support of our community through the sales of Filipino delicacies and cold drinks. Father Ely turned the proceeds of Euro 500 to Pater Antonius.

Members of our Filipino parish rushed down to the Pfarrcafe after the community mass and bought up the stocks of siopao, ensaimada, suman, suman cassava, hopia and pancit within minutes. Heartfelt thanks to the ladies who prepared the pancit and handled the sales.

The GeoChris Foundation, which supports indigenous tribes in the Philippines, was given an opportunity to sell handicraft items and native soaps made of local products. Ms. Ulli Pirkner provided first-hand information about their projects. The proceeds of Euro212.40  went to the Foundation.

Santacruzan, 29 May 2011

Today, the last Sunday in May 2011, we celebrated the Filipino  tradition of Santacruzan to mark the finding of the Holy Cross by Queen Helena (mother of Emperor Constantin) in Jerusalem. It was a true Community event, with all religious organizations contributing through the provision of participants for the figures of the procession (angels, stars, Reynas, Roman soldiers and Constantin), floral decorations, the float with the statue of our Blessed Mother, music ministry, liturgical service and takeaway snacks. Maraming salamat po, vergelt's Gott!

The procession wound its way around Stefan Fadinger Platz before entering the church for the usual Community Mass. At the end of the service numerous parishioners offered flowers to Our Blessed Mother, thus bringing this Marian month to a colourful close.

We welcome Father Ely, who has returned from his personal sojourn to the Philippines

Lange Nacht der Kirchen, 27 May 2011

Ah, pancit .... what would a Filipino celebration be like without it? The Austrian parish looks forward to enjoying it whenever we have a joint celebration. Sarap, talaga.

Joining the many churches in Vienna and other major Austrian cities, our parish of Maria vom Berge Karmel participated in Lange Nacht der Kirchen. It is an evening when churches remain open, inviting the faithful and their guests to come in and experience the church through cultural, intellectual, social or art activities. Our evening started with the celebration of Holy Mass in English and German. While the Filipino community presented a cultural programme with 2 Filipino songs and a modern dance from our youth group, the ladies served Austrian and Filipino delicacies in the church vestibule. Later on, guests were invited to climb the bell tower to gain a superb view of Vienna, and participate in a sound-and-light meditation show in the Lower Church.
